About Aboard Boat Coaching
Aboard Boat Coaching is a fairly new company (incorporated in February 2018) where the management team collectively have over 50 years of boat handling instruction knowledge and experience between them! We are no strangers to Training though and have been running RYA Courses for quite some time. The name may be new, but the Instructors have been running courses for some time with a wealth of experience.
We have chosen Universal Marina as our home not only because of its superb location and quick access to the ideal cruising and learning waters of the Solent, the river Hamble, and the Isle of Wight, but also because of the facilities on site, the Marina team and range of complementary services available at Universal marina. You can read more about these on Universal Marina’s website, it is a fantastic lifestyle location. http://www.universalmarina.co.uk
John Abel (Principal and Finance Director) and Mike Coulson (Chief Instructor and Operations Director) have founded Aboard Boat Coaching to provide a fresh approach to RYA Powerboat training and boat handling experiences. We are very much customer focused.
Our emphasis is on making sure you enjoy your learning experiences with us whilst we deliver the knowledge you require in a fun environment. We do this by providing accredited RYA courses and by tailoring packages to you to provide all the powerboat and other related knowledge that you will need both this country and when you travel abroad and want to charter something. We work with quality instructors, quality kit and facilities in a safe, fun and cost-effective way for you. If there is something you can’t find on this web site or a service or combination of services you would like us to provide to you, please get in touch and we will do our very best to meet your needs. If we dont yet offer a course you want, we will gladly put you in touch with trusted others who can.
Mike has spent over 30 years on boats of various types and has been a Powerboat Instructor since 2008. He has formal teaching qualifications as a qualified classroom trainer in addition to his boating qualifications. He is a very calm and relaxed Instructor, he is absolutely meticulous for planning and attention to detail.
John has been a keen boater and boat owner in the UK and in US waters for the last 20 years but is relatively new to RYA powerboating having taken his powerboat level 2 course, day skipper theory exam, VHF SRC exam and his powerboat instructor’s course & exam all in the last two years. As well as upholding the necessary school standards including RYA Recognition Guidance Notes and the RYA Code of Conduct and ensuring our compliance with them, John will be running the business side of the new school. He will also assist Mike on the delivery of some of the powerboat courses. John has spent the last 40 years in business and commerce, most recently as CEO of a financial services firm in the city with policy and regulatory compliance and ensuring operational quality was of paramount importance, so he is well suited to the role of Principal.
