About the course

 

The online RYA CEVNI Course provides a clear and structured introduction to the rules and signage used on the inland waterways of Europe. CEVNI—Code Européen des Voies de la Navigation Intérieure—acts as the “Highway Code” for rivers, lakes and canals, and anyone wishing to use their ICC (International Certificate of Competence) on inland waterways must pass the CEVNI test. The online course teaches students how to recognise and interpret the full range of signs, symbols and signals used throughout European inland waters. This includes understanding lights and shapes displayed by vessels, sound signals, bank- and bridge-side signage, navigational marks, priority rules, speed restrictions and traffic-management systems. It also covers byelaws, lock procedures and safe conduct when meeting, overtaking or crossing other traffic. The interactive format uses videos, diagrams, quizzes and practice tests to help learners gain confidence before attempting the final online CEVNI test.

The course is aimed at anyone planning to travel on Europe’s inland waterways, whether by motor cruiser, yacht, barge, hire-boat or personal craft. It is particularly relevant for leisure boaters applying for an ICC with the inland endorsement.
