Mental Health Awareness and Wellbeing for Seafarers

The Mental Health Awareness and Wellbeing for Seafarers course is designed to address the unique psychological challenges faced by those working at sea. Life onboard can involve long periods away from home, isolation, demanding workloads, and exposure to hazardous environments. This course provides seafarers with practical knowledge to recognise signs of mental ill health in themselves and others, including stress, anxiety, depression, loneliness, fatigue and substance misuse. Learners explore the impact of the maritime working environment on mental wellbeing and are given strategies to cope with pressure, build resilience and maintain a healthy work–life balance while onboard. The course also covers how to communicate concerns effectively, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and support colleagues through empathetic listening and appropriate signposting to professional help. Additional topics typically include sleep management, conflict resolution, cultural awareness and techniques for promoting a positive onboard culture.
The course is aimed at all seafarers, regardless of rank or vessel type, including deck crew, engineers, officers, masters, and those working on commercial ships, workboats, superyachts, fishing vessels and offshore installations. It is equally valuable for shoreside staff, maritime trainers and managers who wish to better understand the mental health needs of seafarers. The course is suitable for individuals with no prior mental health training and is increasingly recognised as an important component of safe and effective maritime operations.
