HSE First Aid at Work 2 day (revalidation) course

Highfield & SQA HSE First Aid at Work 2 day revalidation course

About the course

The HSE 2-Day First Aid at Work Requalification Course is designed for individuals who already hold a valid First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate and need to renew it for a further three years. The Health and Safety Executive requires FAW certificates to be revalidated every three years, and this two-day course provides an efficient yet thorough refresher of the full three-day syllabus. It ensures that first aiders maintain the knowledge, skills and confidence required to respond effectively to a wide variety of workplace emergencies.

What the course covers – The requalification course revisits all key topics from the original FAW programme, combining revision with updated best practice and hands-on scenario-based training. Learners refresh their understanding of the responsibilities of a workplace first aider, including incident assessment, risk minimisation and communication with emergency services. The course places strong emphasis on practical skills such as CPR for adults, the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and the management of unresponsive casualties. Students practise treating choking, severe bleeding, shock, burns, fractures, sprains, crush injuries, head and spinal injuries, and chest injuries.

Medical emergencies are also revisited, including heart attacks, strokes, seizures, asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetic issues and allergic reactions. Learners review and update bandaging techniques, wound management, casualty monitoring and safe positioning. Throughout the two days, realistic simulations allow participants to practise their responses under time pressure. The course also includes any changes to HSE guidance, Resuscitation Council UK protocols and the latest first-aid standards. Assessment is carried out through practical demonstration and written questions to confirm competence.

Who it is aimed at – The 2-Day First Aid at Work Requalification Course is aimed at anyone whose FAW certificate is nearing expiry (within 28 days of the expiry date) or has recently lapsed. It is especially relevant for employees in medium- to high-risk workplaces where a full FAW qualification is legally required. This includes construction, manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, agriculture, transportation, hospitality, security, sports centres and any environment where workers face physical, mechanical or environmental hazards.

It is also essential for employers who must meet HSE first-aid provision requirements as part of their workplace risk assessments. The course suits designated first aiders, team leaders, supervisors, safety officers and staff responsible for emergency response roles. By completing the requalification, participants ensure they remain competent, confident and legally compliant in delivering first aid at work.

We hold recognition from both Highfield Training (at Aboard Boat Coaching) and the Scottish Qualification Authority (‘SQA’) (at Powerboat Training UK) for these first aid courses and of course the RYA First Aid course is equivalent too. Courses can be dual certificated on request.

Revalidation criteria – You must be about to expire in your current FAW certificate, or no longer than one month after expiry of your FAW certificate if taking the 2 day version of this course as a re-validation, otherwise you must take the full 3 day course.

(Note: Students must be aged 16 or more to attend the HSE courses.)
