RYA Dayskipper Theory Course – CLASSROOM

RYA Dayskipper Theory course - Classroom version

About the course

The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course is a comprehensive shorebased training programme designed to give aspiring skippers the essential knowledge required to safely plan and undertake short coastal passages. This course forms the foundation of good seamanship and navigation skills and is typically taken before, or alongside, the practical RYA Day Skipper Practical course. It is taught over approximately 40 hours, either in the classroom or online, and culminates in two written assessments.

The course syllabus covers a wide range of subjects relevant to navigation and safety at sea. Students learn how to interpret charts, understand buoyage systems, calculate tidal heights and streams, and apply these to real-life route planning. Key elements include traditional and electronic navigation, course-to-steer calculations, plotting positions, and the use of almanacs and pilot books. Meteorology is also covered, teaching students how to interpret weather forecasts, recognise weather patterns, and understand the implications for passage planning.

In addition to navigation, the course focuses on the Collision Regulations (COLREGs), ensuring students know the “rules of the road” at sea. Other topics include safety equipment, emergency procedures, anchoring techniques, and the basics of passage planning and pilotage. By the end of the course, students will feel confident preparing a passage and understanding the factors that affect safe and efficient boat handling.

The RYA Day Skipper Theory Course is aimed at aspiring skippers who already have some basic boating experience, such as competent crew or equivalent. It is ideal for leisure motor boaters, sailors and powerboaters, new boat owners, and anyone stepping up from crew to skipper. It’s also suitable for those working toward professional qualifications, such as Yachtmaster or commercial endorsements. Whether you’re planning coastal cruising holidays, chartering abroad, or looking to take more responsibility on the water, the Day Skipper Theory Course provides the essential knowledge to navigate with confidence and competence.
