SHOREBASED– 3 Day First Aid at Work Course (HSE)

Course Description

Note, we can also award the RYA First Aid Course Certificate together with a FAW Certificate if we add a few more modules to the syllabus (2 for 1).

This course is suitable for persons aged 16 or over who might need to provide first aid in the workplace. It is also required to validate some First Aid Instructor awards.

It is ideal for organisations who have identified a requirement for additional first aid training, such as having employees that may employ staff with certain needs or medical conditions.

In addition to the topics covered on an RYA One day Course (Emergency First Aid at Work Course), this course covers treatment for a variety of injuries and medical conditions.

Students will develop the first aid skills and confidence to help someone who:

  • is unresponsive, not breathing or not breathing normally, including how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • is unresponsive and breathing, including how to place a casualty in the recovery position
  • is choking or has a breathing problem
  • is bleeding
  • is suffering from shock
  • has burns
  • feels faint
  • has been poisoned
  • has a head injury, including a fractured skull
  • has a heat disorder such as hypothermia or hyperthermia
  • has an injury to a bone, muscle or joint (including spinal injuries).

Students will also be able to help a casualty who is having a:

  • seizure
  • heart attack, including the administration of aspirin
  • angina attack
  • stroke
  • asthma attack
  • severe allergic reaction
  • diabetic emergency.

The course also includes information on:

  • assessing a casualty
  • monitoring a casualty
  • where to get help
  • electrical incidents
  • accident recording and reporting
  • the control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH).

The course runs from 9am or 9:30am until 5pm each day, with a lunch break between the morning and afternoon sessions. You can store a packed lunch in our fridge, or there is a coffee shop or restaurant onsite for breakfasts, lunch and evening meals.

Delivered in our large classroom, this course offers a practical, hands-on approach that delivers the skills and confidence to use first aid skills in a safe learning environment. For added reassurance, each student is assessed throughout the course using a range of practical demonstrations, question and answer sessions, quizzes and engaging activities, such as role-play etc, designed to coach and support them.

To ensure you get the most effective learning experience, students must be physically able to participate and we limit group size to 6 people.

Each learner receives a training pack including a host of resources to help them practice the skills covered. The pack includes a course companion workbook, first aid manual, bandages and more. All our courses meet and often exceed the HSE’s criteria for what is expected of training providers and we have some highly qualified and experienced first aid trainers.

On successful completion of this course, you will receive a first aid at work certificate which is valid for three years. This course meets the requirements specified by the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and is a QNUK Level 3 Award FAW (RQF).

The HSE requires 18 contact hours for this course. Learners must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment, which is done by continuous observation and questioning during the course and a assessment test at the end.
