Please note our price quoted for this course includes the £70 direct payment to the RYA for the exam at the end of your course.
There is a legal requirement to have an Operators Licence (SRC), if you wish to use your VHF Marine Radio. You are breaking the law if you do not have an Operators Licence to use the Radio. You could face a fine of up to £5000, 6 months imprisonment and confiscation of your Radio Equipment if you do not have a Licence to Operate (this is called an SRC Certificate), which stand for Short Range Certificate. Its like having a Driving Licence for your car, if you don’t have one, you can’t drive (the same thing).
You also need (issued by Ofcom), a boat Radio Licence for the Radio Fitted on your boat. The licence is for your boats Radio and it is like having the old tax disc in the window of your car. You need a boat licence and an operators licence to use your Marine VHF Radio. Many people don’t realise they are breaking the law if they don’t comply with Ofcom regulations (the Office of Communications), which is a Government Department for regulation & enforcement. So in summary, to avoid breaking the law onboard your boat, you need a licence for your own boat and a licence to use the radio for yourself, or to use a handheld radio. The classroom will be the ABC First Aid training room at Universal Marina. We have excellent facilities and equipment for this course and we get very impressive feedback from our students.
First Aid – Instructor
The Instructor will be a Shorebased First Aid Instructor qualified to run the course with an in date First Aid at Work Certificate & RYA Shorebased validation or re-validation. RYA First Aid Instructors need to re-qualify through both the RYA and the First Aid at Work program. The First Aid at Work Certificate, validates an Instructors First Aid teaching Certificate. All our First Aid Instructors are experienced First Aiders and have formal teaching qualifications or the RYA teaching in the classroom qualification. You will get a really well presented RYA First Aid Course with any of our First Aid Instructors as they are all very good at teaching this course.
The RYA First Aid Course is not an attendance Course where you receive a Certificate at the end, you must prove to us you can do certain things (RYA Can do’s), such as putting someone in the recovery position, performing good CPR and bandaging etc. We will show you how and assess you at the time constantly throughout the day, there is no test/assessment at the end.

Shorebased Courses – RYA Radar (one day) or the optional 2 day Radar Course.
RYA Radar Course
Day one is the RYA Radar Course and the Radar Course Certificate is awarded. You can also go on to learn how to use Radar with classroom based simulators and set exercises to interpret what you have learnt on Day one (which is mostly the theory of Radar).
Radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids, but the best results are only obtained when you know how to use all the functions correctly. It is not an all seeing eye, and can easily mislead those who do not understand its controls, allow for it’s limitations, or interpret its picture.
Courses held are limited to 6 students. There is access to Raymarine and Garmin radar equipment plus a Radar and Navigation simulator.
The Radar simulator gives you the opportunity to run various scenarios from various locations on a range of boats – and if you sink, go aground or hit something – It doesn’t matter as you are safe & sound indoors.Read More »

First Aid at Work
Note: If needed, we can also offer an RYA First Aid Certificate in addition to the FAW certificate if needed by adding a few more modules to the Course.
The First Aid at Work course (QNUK level 3 Award FAW (RQF), is a 3 day training course covering basic first aid and secondary care, this includes everything covered in the Emergency First Aid at Work course but also includes a more in-depth understanding of a wide range of conditions and injuries. This first aid course is written to UK Resuscitation Council protocols and are recognised by a number of national governing bodies as approved first aid courses, they also meet the need of employers looking to meet First Aid at Work regulations. As well as covering subjects such as CPR, choking, bleeding, all of our courses teach how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a lifesaving device that can significantly improve someone’s chances of survival after they suffer a cardiac arrest.
